An inside look at Valencia's "A Raisin in the Sun"

     Preparations are underway for a live production of the classic American play, “A Raisin in the Sun” at the Black Box Theater at Valencia’s east campus. This play will dive head first into powerfully compelling subject matter, with high emotions from complicated characters.

     The original production was developed by Lorraine Hansberry, inspired by the struggles of her own family, wrote the play and went on to receive four Tony award nominations when it premiered on Broadway in 1960. Along with the Valencia Theater production’s talented cast is guest actor Avis-Marie Barnes who plays the family’s main supporter and nurturer, Mama. She is a seasoned performer who has acted professionally in several movies and television programs.

     “It’s a punch to the gut, and that's what I want,” said the plays director, John DiDonna. “I want it to be a punch in the gut from the time it starts to the time it ends. I don’t want the audience to have a chance to breathe.”

     The story follows the problems of an extended African-American family, living together in a cramped and rundown apartment, dealing with racism, poverty, and tragedy during the 1950s. Issues of morality, betrayal and discrimination are sure to strike an emotional cord with those in attendance.

     The focus and momentum of the entire production is on Walter Lee Younger, played by drama veteran Parris Baker. He has big dreams, passionate views and the need to find a purpose in his life. He is also under stress at work and home, and when he finally starts to see his dreams come true he is kicked back down by cruel twists of fate.

     “When something is well written like this play you can dive into the words, and when you make the words your own, then the emotion will carry,” said Parris Baker, who plays Walter. This demanding role is strongly defined and personalized by Baker, who was inspired by the original performance of the revered actor Sidney Poitier.

     The rest of the cast has shining moments and conflicting issues that they face and support each other through. Most notably is the supporting role played by the character Mama, whose morally strong spirit perseveres to hold the Younger family together.

     Issues addressed in this play are still related to issues faced today more then 50 years after it was written and premiered on Broadway in 1959. Originally it was given mixed reviews for focusing on problems found primarily in the black community, making it hard to relate to for white audiences. The truth is that anyone with a shred of empathy can relate to these universal conflicts of poverty, misjudgement and important decisions about life .

     The youngest character is the troubled son of Walter named Travis Younger, played by the 11-year-old Christopher Redman Jr. He witnesses the hardships endured by his family throughout the story, and has to sleep on the living room sofa because he doesn't have his own room.

     “It teaches him to be appreciative of what he has at this day and time,” said Christopher ‘s mother, Alycia Redman. The strong lessons learned by her son about injustice and double standards can also be shared by anyone who watches this production.

     The actors are fine tuning their blocking, the set construction is almost complete, and overall, the production is currently ahead of schedule for opening night. Under the passionate enthusiasm of director John DiDonna, the cast and crew are all more than confident that the audience will be treated to a powerfully moving experience.

     Tickets are already being sold for this play with a strong recommendation to purchase ahead of time, because days are already being sold out weeks in advance for the small theater. “A Raisin in the Sun” will run from Feb. 15-19 and Feb. 22-26. Bernice King wants us to look "Beyond the Dream"

     Daughter of acclaimed civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. presented a speech titled “Raising the Standard” on Tuesday Jan. 24.Dr. Bernice A. King called for real, positive change in today’s society, and for everyone to see beyond her father’s acclaimed “I Have a Dream” speech of 1963 and look at his work in the years that followed, with a focus on the severe economic issues that we still face today.

     A representative from Orlando mayor Buddy Dyers office came on behalf of Dyer to speak after Kings speech. He announced that Jan. 24 will officially be recognized as “Dr. Bernice A. King Day” in the city of Orlando, and also awarded her with a ceremonial key to the city.

     During the speech King quoted French poet and human rights activist Victor Hugo, who once said, “If the soul is left in darkness, sins will be committed. The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness.”

     She used this quote to point out the complacency a majority of today’s society has toward the problems facing the world. The current generation needs to take action, said King, because as she sees it, this generation is not inheriting a better nation than the previous.
Though great strides have been made made toward justice and equality since the civil rights movement, said King, there is still much left to be done to ensure the stability of this nation through the prosperity of its people.

     “The part of the darkness in our society is not because of those who perpetuate injustices and wrongdoings,” said King, “it’s because of the millions of us who are complacent, who refuse to get involved in changing our society for the better.”

     King predicts a time like the turbulent 1960s, when, as a nation, citizens may have to go out and show their displeasure with the current state of America. With issues like the lack of health care, high unemployment, the foreclosure crises, a crumbling infrastructure of roads and bridges, and a general breakdown in the political arena, society is reaching a crossroad, according to King. These issues — as well as the global financial crisis — reflect a broken system of government that continues to worsen as problems are continually ignored.

     Fighting the rise in apathy is part of what raising the standard is all about. Along with a focus on improving our educational standards and society in general, King called for society to rally together and strive to avoid the social and moral deterioration that threatens America today.

     “Definitely a great message to spread, to get students more active in our education, and let them know that there are many important issues we need to address,” said Luis Cano, student government president at Valencia’s East Campus.

     Throughout the speech King received several positive reactions from a focused and seemingly spell-bound audience. Numerous audience members could be heard comparing her strong, passionate, and focused church-revivalist-delivery style to that of her late, great father, who she also resembles physically. Many feel King is one of the strongest leaders for social change in this generation.

     “I hope that students take away those central core values and character essentials that are so important to all of us as human beings, and certainly as citizens of this great nation,” said Falecia Williams, president of Valencia’s West Campus.

Florida may decide front-runner of 2012 GOP race

     The political eyes of the nation are on Florida this week after the unprecedented shake-up and come from behind win by Newt Gingrich in last Saturday’s South Carolina primary election. Only a few weeks ago former Governor Mitt Romney was two for two in primary elections and slated for his third victory in South Carolina.

     Unexpected calculation errors were discovered last week for the original Iowa Caucus on Jan. 3. When the votes were recounted the winner was found to be the former Senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum, and not a narrow victory by Romney.

     Past election results are used by political analysts to predict the final party nominee. Whoever wins the first two state elections goes on to be the nominee, or who ever wins in South Carolina goes on to be the party’s nominee. This is the first time the first three states have gone to three different candidates, and in an election where more than half of the voters are consistently undecided just days before going to the polls.

     Decisions of who people vote for are coming down to the last minute in the undecided majority. This shows that many voters are paying close attention to the debates and what the candidates really have to say about the issues.

     Some now equate the former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s victory in South Carolina to be the result of a fiery response during the start of the CNN debate last Thursday, just 36 hours before the election. Gingrich was asked by the debate moderator John King about accusations from his ex-wife, Marianne Gingrich, about permission for infidelity or an “open marriage.” Gingrich adamantly denied this accusation in a scalding response that attacked the media, and the overall negative tone of his rivals’ campaigns through political attack adds funded by faceless super PACs.

     Gingrich, with his questionable past of infidelity, ethics violations, and post-political ties to lobbyist in Washington, blew the assumed front runner Mitt Romney out of the water, and received a large majority of the vote at over 40 percent. This was partly explained by South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham during an interview he gave on CBS Sunday Morning said voters in his state want a candidate with strong convictions. So a candidate who is challenged on a strong issue and defends himself well enough can win over an undecided voter. And a weak or unsure answer -- like Romney on releasing his tax returns -- will cause a candidate to lose voter support.

     So with split winners in the first three states, the GOP is now set in an essential tie, starting from scratch going into the fourth state for the first time in history. All eyes and attention on this Republican election will be focused on the state of Florida.

     The Romney camp, which has spent millions in political adds over the past few weeks, will now be joined by all other candidates. There has been more high stakes mass-marketing political advertisement in these campaign than has been seen before, because this is the first election after the Supreme Court’s decision on Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which allows unlimited funding to political action groups to support free speech.

     The 2008 election results are often used during political analysis which favors McCain and Romney, but more recently on Sept. 24, 2011 there was a straw poll in Orlando. This can give some indication of the Florida vote, but results are also unreliable because the top two finishers were Herman Cain and Rick Perry -- who are no longer in the race.

     Gingrich, with his newly found momentum, will have to work hard and spend fast to repair his poor showing in the Florida straw poll, where representative delegates from every county in the state only gave him less than nine percent of the vote.

     Florida moved up it’s primary day for the outright reason to have more political sway in the election process. As said by Florida Governor Rick Scott at the Republican convention last Sept., “The state of Florida has a larger population than the other primary and caucus states combined.”

     There’s over 10 million more, to be specific, with a population representing far more diversity in age range and ethnicity. This, on top of the undecided status of the election, leads Florida toward truly being the most important primary state in this election so far.

     With a smaller, more focused field of potential candidates, the attack adds will be flying, the accusations will get nasty, and the state of Florida gets a chance to reverse the preconceived notion that this is a state of confused centenarian voters, baffled by which lever to pull, having no real idea about political issues in Washington. One of the more diverse and highly populated states in America, Florida now has the opportunity to determine who the Republican party nominee will be to face-off against President Obama’s re-election bid during the national election.

     Though considered a “swing state,” Florida has been a strongly Republican state in the past. This is a unique opportunity to not only help elect the party nominee, but also rally the GOP for the Republican national convention in Tampa later this year in August, a sentiment that harkens back to the attention the state received during the 2000 national election between Bush and Gore.

     If the late, great broadcast journalist Tim Russert were still alive today, he would no doubt don his iconic white board, showing “Florida Florida Florida” at the forefront of the political limelight once again.

New Orleans artist shares with a personal touch

     Haunting visual works of the tragic and rich region of New Orleans are now featured at the Anita S. Wooten Gallery at Valencia College East Campus. Artist Barbara Brainard attended the opening night of her exhibit to talk about what inspired the artwork, and also answered questions from those in attendance.

     “There has been a lot of interest in exactly what they are looking at, because the city is so diverse and complicated geographically,” said Brainard. A resident of New Orleans for 30 years, Brainard was inspired by the paintings of abstract impressionist Richard Diebenkorn, and her post grad-school work with mono-type artwork.

     The artwork featured in the gallery are mono-types which are created by etching ink on a plate and pressing a paper over the plate with a press. It’s a style that has been around for over 370 years and has a damp and aged look with a random outcome. Some of the works featured were only recently finished by the artist and sent to this display directly from her studio.

     Close examination of the artwork will show several details with an overall foggy and somber feel. In a city surrounded and often equated with water, an impression is given of the damage done -- the city is now a ghost of its former self.

     Brainard spoke about most of the pieces describing the sights, sounds, and smells of each location. Brief history lessons were also given, mostly involving once great or sadly still un-recovered landscapes, with a strong focus on the architecture of iconic buildings, and with back stories that you wouldn't normally note from the misty images.

     “It’s very unique work, and it’s so good to have it explained in detail,” said Samuel Ramos, a second year art student. He, along with over 50 others, were in attendance to hear Brainard go into extended details during her presentation.

     A lot of the details of post-Katrina New Orleans are genuinely unsettling and hard for outsiders to fully understand. Seven years later some of the scars still haven’t healed, and the city continues to rot as areas continue to fall into disorder.

     “It’s a gritty city and this style works really well with that; it let’s the images swirl,” said professor of reading Karen Cowden.

     Being tied to such an interesting city, this exhibit provides a diverse opportunity for students and the general public to be reminded of the story of New Orleans, and how this has lessons that can be learned for the future.

     “Our students are able to come in, see this with their professors, and talk about what this means. So it’s applicable to almost every discipline that we have,” said Ruth Prather, Valencia’s east campus president.

Valencia's president Sandy Shugart live in concert

     A special musical performance by Valencia’s president and singer-songwriter Sanford Shugart was held at the Garden Theater in Winter Garden. Funds raised from this event will be used to create future internships at the Garden Theater for Valencia’s performing arts students.

     This money will be set aside to create real job opportunities for arts and entertainment students.

     “It’s just a little way to continue to weave the connection between the college and the community,” said Shugart.

     This performance marked the release of Shugart’s fourth album, called “Distance We Keep,” through Valencia supported FlatFoot Records. Shugart is a busy man, overseeing more than 75,000 students and five different campuses, so live performances are indeed a rare treat for any of his fans, friends, and family. His family, Shugart adds, has a deeply rich love of musical performance and singing.

     The nearly sold out 299 seat garden theater was an ideal setting for such a laid-back and intimate performance. The stage was set like a simple living room with an old worn-in couch and a small beige acoustic upright piano.

     Shugart’s musical style is the purest form of classic American folk, complete with mandolin and violin accompaniments, steady, low pumping bass rhythms, and a simple and warm singing style similar to the late, great John Denver.

     “I couldn't compare him to another artist, but I can say he’s an original mix of folk, country, a little contemporary,” said Bruce Young, a financial advisor at Edward Jones and friend of Dr. Shugart.

     Throughout the show there were also light hearted moments of story-telling by Dr. Shugart with what inspired certain songs. One audience member even joked during a quiet moment in one particularly emotional song, “Sandy I thought you said you weren't going to make us cry tonight.”

     Emotions truly run high in touching folk songs like “No one lives there anymore” and “The Way Back Home.” And in addition to easy going songs were some upbeat tunes with funny lessons, like how the rat-race of life can turn you into a rat, or the classic southern story of the crazy uncle that taught you how to drive, shoot, and swear as a “youngin.”

     Audience member and professor of English Rebecca Shevlin said, “It shows you can have your independence, your education and your talent all combined into one. And I think that's brilliant.”

     The “Garden Theater” is a historical location that was originally used to show tractors to local farmers back in the 1930s. Shugart worked with the theater over four years ago during their most recent renovations to help build the location into a functional live performance location.

     Though now viewed by some as a celebration of Valencia's Aspen Prize win and recognition of Shugart’s work, this connection with the “Garden Theater” and Valencia has been ongoing for several years. It’s further strengthened by the plans for new internship opportunities for Valencia arts and entertainment students.

Guest speaker will bring accounts of Liberian war

     Stories about the violent First and Second Liberian Civil Wars will be presented at the Special Events Center at Valencia College west campus on Jan. 26 by guest speaker Agnes Umunna.

     Umunna is a journalist who has produced and hosted a Liberian radio program called “Straight from the Heart.”

     The program is designed to encourage Liberians to call in and recount their experiences over the 14 year conflict that took hundreds of thousands of lives and embodied the horrors of war, including children armed with machine guns who were used as soldiers.

     Umunna will be speaking with classes throughout the day, and is scheduled for a meet and greet event at 6:30 p.m. This will be followed by a free screening of the critically acclaimed film, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” winner of best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008.

     The film tells the story of a peace movement called Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, which was organized by social worker Leymah Gbowee, whose actions helped end the civil war in 2003. She was also a recipient of The Nobel Peace Prize 2011.

     This event is organized by Valencia’s H.E.R.O.S. club, and in partnership with the Global Peace Film Festival and Valencia’s Peace and Justice Initiative. H.E.R.O.S.’s main goals are furthering education about global injustices and empathy toward underprivileged individuals.

     The free showing of the film “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Special Events Center, and will be followed by an open discussion lead by Umunna.

     The event’s organizers promise that this will be a powerful and engaging event that will inspire students to work for creating a better world. Detailed accounts of war violence may be disturbing to some viewers, but the lessons learned will enrich all who wish to learn from the past.

Valencia wins first Aspen Institute prize, $600,000

Valencia College was acknowledged as one of the top educational institutions in the nation after wining the inaugural Aspen Award for Community College Excellence. Along with the award comes a grant of $600,000 that Valencia can spend to expand on it’s future goals in education.

Valencia was given this honor because of striving to improve what really matters in a community college. Valencia’s degree awards rates are one of the best nationally for a community college. Graduates get employed at a higher rate then any other Aspen finalist and the school boasts the highest number of four year college transfer students in the nation.

“If it can be done at a community college setting, they’re doing at Valencia, and they’re doing it very very well,” said former Michigan governor John Engler. Engler and former South Carolina senator Richard Riley presented the award to Valencia’s president Sandy Shugart during the Monday-morning ceremony at Washington, DC.

“We have this unique instrument at hand unlike any other institution anywhere else in the world,” said Shugart, speaking to the crowd at the ceremony after receiving the award. “Where excellence is not defined by exclusivity or expensiveness, and where opportunity is genuine.”

Millions of students have shared in this unique opportunity since the founding of Valencia in Orlando, Florida in 1967. Valencia ranked number one last year for awarding the most Associate degrees in the nation’s for two-year institutions. There is a current annual enrollment of over 70,000 students and an operating annual budget well over $160 million dollars.

Global educational trends show that the U.S has falling to twelfth place for young adults with Associate degrees, and nationally there is an increase of students dropping out of high school or feel unprepared to attend college after graduation. Despite this Valencia projects to expanded on it’s number of graduates through its commitment to equitable outcomes and success plans for lower income and minority students.

Community colleges furthering the skills of American workers is a strong focal point for fixing the economic woes of the recent economic recession. With so many people today out of work or underemployed, continued educational programs like the one offered at Valencia are encouraged and supported by many in government.

“It’s incumbent on us to keep to keep our country strong. We are really fighting for our country here,” said secretary of education, Arne Duncan, at the award ceremony. “Keep those jobs here, and the only way we can do that is through great community colleges.”

Currently around 60% of available jobs require advanced degrees, while only 40% of adult American workers have those degrees. If Americans don’t step up to fill theses jobs they will migrate overseas and continue the general economic downturn in the near future.

The Aspen Institute hopes to continue awarding future institutions by furthering this into a yearly prize. Founded in 1950 this organization's goals are "fostering enlightened leadership, the appreciation of timeless ideas and values, and open-minded dialogue on contemporary issues."

Unorthodox speech at Muslim student conference

The Muslim Student Association at Valencia’s East Campus hosted its first conference, highlighted by Wisam Sharieff, a prominent Muslim American with an unorthodox speaking style and an ambitious plan for international peace.

“We don’t need more words; we need more love,” said Sharieff, “but love doesn’t have its own language, yet.” He addressed the gathering of more than 500 Muslim Americans from the local community, and MSA groups from UCF, USF, Rollins, and more. They came out to this conference to address complicated religious issues and the proper role of modern technology.

Sharieff has an idea that expands the United Nations International Day of Peace to a long break in the near future of up to four months of international peace. The concept was equated to parents that have children who are fighting will separate them to let their tempers cool down. He is planning to meet and speak with Arabic leaders in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, London, and elsewhere to expand on this concept of unified peace.

Though it can be dismissed as an over-zealous or unattainable goal, you can not deny that it’s ambitious, especially for a young anthropologist relatively new to public speaking. For ten years Sharieff was in and out of hospitals battling illnesses, and spent his time studying the lessons of the Bible, Torah, and Koran. It was during this period he developed his plan for peace and an international language (like American Sign Language) to unify the world through basic human understanding.

Other topics addressed at Saturday’s conference were staying away from being judgmental, stereotypical, and negative, and how to deal with a situation involving these behaviors. Included in the agenda was a long discussion on “The Beauty of Hijab” with its dress and personal requirement’s purpose and function.

Another topic of discussion included the relatively new stigma of finding a balance in the over saturation from social media web sites and smart phones. Some participants fear many younger Muslims are acting conservative in public, but behaving differently behind the anonymity of a computer screen.

This is tied directly into the goal of the Muslim Student Association to inform, educate, and enlighten others concerning the Islamic religion.

“Our goals are dispelling misconceptions that people may have about our religion” said Amir Khan, President of MSA on East Campus. “People think we’re all like terrorists, or all Muslims are from the Middle East, it’s obvious that’s not the case.” Khan’s family is originally from South America and has no family ties to anyone overseas.

There is a general frustration with misconceptions that Muslims face in a post 9/11 world. “It’s the only religion this day that has to defend itself,” said Dainia Abu Jubara. “If you say that person is Christian or that person is Jewish no one cares, but if you say they are Muslim then you have to defend or justify that.”

Aside from informing students and helping with campus events MSA recently raised $1,000 to help with the people of Somalia. “We have Project Downtown where every two weeks we go to downtown Orlando and cook food, make sandwiches, and feed the homeless,” said MSA member Manar Isis. The main goal of MSA is spreading a positive message and helping the college meet its goal of embracing diversity.

“We have students from around the world, and different cultures within MSA,” said Valencia professor MSA advisor Yasmeen Qadri. “It’s so important that we are all on the same page, and working towards the same goals."

Students explore new study abroad opportunities

Valencia College has a long standing rapport from having a highly diverse student body and strong ties with several study abroad educational programs. This was on display last week as Valencia Volunteers worked with multi-cultural advisers and other guest speakers to inform students about more than 65 different international cultures.

This was tied into International Eduction Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and U.S. Department of Education that works to prepare Americans for a global environment.

“This is always a great gathering to inform our student about so many diverse aspects of world cultures,” said Bliss Thompson, counselor of International student services at Valencia. “Our goal for next year is to make this a college wide event”

This is the fifth year IEW events have been sponsored by the dean of students at West and East Campuses, with an encouragement and emphasis on informing others about lesser known or misunderstood cultural aspects from around the world. Several divers topics were shared with dozens of information stations with student made project displays, with the general theme of international understanding and cross-boarder cooperation.

“I’m really interested in different holidays from around the world, like the Chinese New Year” said nursing major Zandra Nelson. She was talking with other students and displaying her own project on international holidays.

“It’s so good to understand the truth about other places around the world,” said international student Taiama Ferreira. “It’s not always just what you see on television.” Ferreira hopes to study abroad in Rome and Spain when she finishes at Valencia.

There are currently seven different study abroad short term faculty lead trips planed; India, England, Guyana, Denmark, China, Poland, and the Dominican republic. All trips give college credits and focus on studying a specific porous in other countries, like in England where students will be touring British press outlets like the BBC as part of a global immersion in journalism.

Valencia alumni Michelle Steffenson was speaking to student about her own travels around the world. “Research a lot to know what to expect before to travel,” she advised. “That’s the best advice I can give.” Originally born in Denmark, Steffenson came to Valencia through the international exchange student program, and now shares her experience from traveling to dozens of countries.

Truly understanding and working with other cultures is the key to international cooperation with global community’s ending the wars, suffering, and injustice seen through all corners of the globe. Confronting hunger, injustice around the world

“Draw your fate,” the H.E.R.O. crew said, holding bags to participants as they walked into the Oxfam hunger banquet on Thursday, Nov. 11.

Students drew cards with one of three classifications; high income, middle income, or low income, and took their places in the room according to their class.

A lucky 15 percent were welcomed to the high class fine- dining table. Seated in chairs around the room was the middle class, representing 33 percent of the diners. More than half of the participants sat on the floor as low income citizens.

Six lucky low income students were moved to middle class, representatives of real-life people whose stories were shared with the audience. The six represented a group of Mexican workers whose ingenuity and hard work enabled them to start go into business for themselves and quit the factory and farm labor. No one from the high income group was moved.

For the fortunate six whose lives improved, there were six middle class students who moved to the floor to join to low income group. Two represented African women who operated farms in Ethiopia. One, who did not own her land, was forced off when the government sold it to a Canadian gold mining company. The other was pushed into poverty when the corporation’s factory polluted the water, poisoning her cows and goats.

“Poverty does not give a damn who you are,” said Subhas Rampersaud, professor of social sciences at Valencia’s West Campus. “Tomorrow we are going to get up and eat; that is what we do every day. We have no idea what poverty is. Poverty here is relative."

A slide show at the end of the presentation showed pictures of the men and women whose stories were played out by the students representing them, along with happier stories of people who have been helped by Oxfam’s programs.

Oxfam, started in 1955, is an international confederation of non-profit organizations that works to end hunger, poverty, and social injustice. The idea for the hunger banquet came to Valencia when Valencia Honors students attended an impact conference held by the organization.

“This event is a metaphor for how food and resources are distributed throughout the world,” said Honors president Diana Lawrie. “Everyone has the same needs. It is only our circumstances which differ.”

Representative speakers from all the major Valencia groups worked to educate students about hunger and mistreatment from around the world. In this modern age with bountiful resources a child dies from hunger of preventable diseases every four seconds or 22,000 per day on average.

“This whole project was part of a bigger project, about bringing awareness about hunger, poverty, and homelessness” said Diana Lawrie, co-president of H.E.R.O (Human Empathy and Rights Organization.) This Valencia group works to inspire action from students and others about different global injustices like sex trafficking and children’s rights.

This event was based around another strong belief of the groups; to end hunger locally through the Homeless Coalition of Florida and internationally through the Oxfam organization. An international confederation of 98 countries working to find lasting solutions to hunger and injustice around the world.

“We’re trying to bring awareness of whats going on in other areas around the world, and about hunger in the lower class” said David Rosado Jr. student government president for Valencia’s Osceola campus.

A meal of salads, pasta with meat and veggies, and gourmet cake for dessert, was served on a silver platter to the high class, while poor had to eat rice and water with a forced rule of woman eating last. As time went on, some people still hadn’t eaten, and much of the food for the high and middle classes was left for waste.

“It made me actually feel guilty about sitting in the high income section, so I gave up my seat “ said Kris Boodooram a second year international business major.

The students who crossed class lines volunteered by standing up, without knowing their fate. Once some middle class dwellers were forced to leave their chairs, attendees were reluctant to participate.

“I was disappointed in the people that didn’t stand up,” said Leonidez Santiago, who shared in the plain rice and water with others seated in the low income section. “If you’re not standing up it is because you are afraid of losing what you have.”

“Poverty exists, and just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist,” said Victoria Hoa a member of SGA, PTK, and also a member and presenter for H.E.R.O’S. She recently worked with her church to help rebuild a flooded community in Costa Rica. “If everyone worked to help others, they would understand that every little bit makes a difference.“

Event coordinators urged students to think seriously about the reality of the situation, and encouraged those in attendance to turn awareness into action. A petition was available for to sign in support of legislation funding organizations that fight homelessness and charity.

“This event is simulated, but this is the reality for 2.5 billion out of 7 billion living in poverty,” said Rampersaud. “Each of us has a choice. We can stay insulated, but little good will be served if you leave here only with memories."

Stars shine bright at first ever "Orlando Calling"

The two day outdoor music festival "Orlando Calling" rocked Central Florida with over 80 bands from around the nation. Thousands attended this event with headline acts like Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Blake Shelton, and The Killers.

Featured in this video are several artiest and groups along with exclusive interviews by James Tutten from the "Valencia Voice" based out of Valencia College in Orlando, Florida.

Talented students rock, backed by latest media

A talented group of students showcased their musical skills as part of the “Commercial Music Ensemble” presented by the Valencia College music department. This free show also showed off the skilled technical productions Valencia is capable of.

“We do two performances a year, and in the black box we normally have a packed house,” said musical director Troy Gifford.

The seats filled up quickly for this performance with some audiences members standing off to the side for the entire performance. A team of digital media students, led by Julian Matos, filmed the concert with five large HD cameras, and streamed the show live on Valencia’s website.

On top of the full live band with several members switching and playing multiply instruments throughout. The stage, lighting, sound, and video set up utilized well over $50,000 worth of professional grade equipment.

The musical talent and diversity created the magic of the evening. The upbeat and diverse song selection could please everyone’s musical taste, with hits like ‘Superstition’ by Stevie Wonder, ‘Clocks’ by Cold Play, and ‘Jammin’ by Bob Marley.

For only a short few weeks of practice the ensemble gelled as a group and certain members really shined in their personal talent levels. Some members decided to wear some Halloween costumes to add another fun element to the performance.

“My dream job would be to perform and make money off of that, a way to be simultaneously in a opera and be involved in a rock band,” said Samantha Riling-Lopez. A vocal performance major, Riling- Lopez is currently specializing in the classical style, and displayed a pitch perfect, laid-back melodic performance.

Other musicians switched around between songs and played several different instruments like drummer, singer and bassist Andrew Bosh. “A group that gels really well together, just sounds so better, and getting that gel to happen is the most difficult part,” said Bosh.

The show ended with a standing ovation from the packed house.

“I think they did a great job,” said Mike Acavedo. “The horns, drums, vocals, and everything was nice and it just felt comfortable.”

“I saw this same group perform yesterday, I really like Andrew on the drums and Samantha on the vocals did awesome,” said Marlina Conrad, a second year computer information and technology student. “I quite enjoyed it.”

"Awake" marchers meet with Orlando occupiers

The grassroots social media movement “Awake the State” recently marched in support of the “Occupy Orlando” protest based on voters ready to make a stand on shared goals and fears of political corruption.

This march was planned for November because it’s nearly a year away from the 2012 election, with the prime theme being voter registration, and the information that is vital to the upcoming election.

“A lot of the occupations flourish when they gain ground, and they are able to start building an alternative community,” said Thomas Hellinger, a Valencia alumni and member of Orlando Food not Bombs activist group arrested for feeding the homeless over the summer. “I was involved with an anti-war protest back in 2006, and a good rally back then was anything over 10 people.”

Awake the State has a clear objective and clear supporters like the major unions in Florida such as police, firefighters, teachers, and labor. They are unsatisfied with governor Rick Scott and the actions of the Florida State legislative branch. They want to let government officials know that if they continue to be unsatisfied, they will vote them out of office.

“It’s just about voter awareness, engagement, rights, and protection,” said Amy Ritter, an Awake the State member. “We’re all out here upset over the budget, Rick Scott's anti-middle class job killing polices, and a legislature carrying the water for the Governor.”

Occupy Orlando and Awake the State are working together with this protest with a goal of bolstering numbers in support for each cause.

“It’s just powerful seeing all of these diverse folks come out and support for each other against a legislature that is passing law after law on the back of the middle class,” said Tymothy Murray organizer and member of Occupy Orlando.

It’s unclear of the numbers that will continue to support Occupy Orlando by staying in front of the Chamber of Commerce during the upcoming colder month, but it is clear that the message is not going away through the hardcore support of the movement on Wall Street in New York City.

Because of recent protesters being arrested in Orlando, along with violent confrontations with “Occupy Oakland” in California, it’s unclear if this occupation escalates, ends peacefully, fails, or succeeds.

But next November the voice of the people we be clearly defined by the voter turnout, and the results thereafter.

Large donation marks start of "Drowsy Chaperon"

     The Valencia college theater program opened showing of “The Drowsy Chaperon” last Friday in the performing arts center at Valencia's east campus. This unconventional and fun-loving production thrilled the large audience with music, dance, romance, and comedy. There was also a surprise donation of $1,000 to the performing arts program from members of the Valencia Alumni Association

     “The Valencia Alumni Association has always been incredibly generous in their awards and their time spent attending our productions, and we are so very grateful. We also love the idea of our graduates joining the Alumni Association and 'giving back' to the college with their time or talent” said Julia Gagne the plays director and theater professor at Valencia.

     The play; originally written for Broadway in New York, is an homage to the Jazz era in music and set in the post-war roaring 20's America. This is interwoven with a modern style with the help of an unconventional guide and narrator the character “Man in Chair.”

     The best way to describe “The Drowsy Chaperon” is unconventional. It's not the typical play you encounter with standard performing arts style. Rather than a set time-line of events, the play is broken up and starts and stops several time by the “Man in Chair” Character. He works and the narrator and bridge between the performance and the audience.

     Outlandish elements of the show like spit takes, and dancing monkeys are addressed by the “Man in Chair” who describes what the audience is thinking, like just how ridiculous certain scenarios are. By poking fun it allows every to not focus on the absurd, and instead just enjoy for pure entertainment value.

     Musically the entire production is very impressive, with several upbeat and catchy tunes like “Toledo Surprise”, and “Wedding Bells” all accompanied by a talented nine member orchestra lead by musical director Tim Hanes.

     The ensemble cast featured many great singers, and moments where certain performers shined in there vocal talents. Evangeline Mateo who plays the drowsy chaperon gave a rousing solo performance about enjoying one life “As We Stumble Along.”Jillian Gizzi who play the bride Janet Van de Graaff displayed all the talent needed to be a stand alone star on Broadway, who's also a conflicted lover, caught in a crossroad through unexpected revelations on her wedding day.

     Another strong element of this production is the high level of comedy featured thought. A high point created by Paul Layton who plays the over the top Latin Lothario Aldolpho. Layton thrilled and delighted the audience with his lovable yet blatantly stereotypical portrayal of one wild self-proclaimed ladies man.

     “Everyone did a phenomenal job, I watch plays all the time, and this really blew me away, it's a wonderful show” said Derek McAtee a former Valencia student.

     “I thought it was great it was a lot of fun, it made me smile, I caught myself smiling through and I thought it was very clever. There's a lot of talent up there with very good stagecraft was really wonderful” said Patricia Anderson coordinate disability support services at east campus.

     If you missed the first run of shows you only have four chances with three shows Oct 27 – Oct 29 starting at 7:30 pm, and a final matinee performance on Sunday Oct 30 at 2pm. Supreme Court will decide fate of "Obamacare"

     The Supreme Court is set to address the constitutionally of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act, a case that will not only strongly affect his re-election prospects, but also the future of the health-care industry in America.

     One issue that is addressed through the reform act is the requirement of health insurance through an individual mandate, which will require nearly all citizens without health insurance to purchase it by the year 2014 or pay a penalty.

     “People that don’t qualify for Medicaid, or covered by their employers is a big issue with our students, the college doesn't offer any discounts and we have students at Valencia with no health insurance” said (I’ll have to get her name Monday, I lost it so I just have to walk back to the office)

     The fundamental question for this being dose the constitution give congress the right to require individuals to purchase a product such as health insurance, and punish them if they do not.

     If the Supreme Court does rule that this mandate is unconstitutional, this would inevitably end the entire debate, because the individual mandate is a major component of the entire health care reform act.

     Allowing people with pre-existing health conditions is a primary condition of the Obamacare system. Some cannot afford insurance, have pre-existing health problems, or even ‘free-riders’ are some of the current problems seen in our health case system.Though Obamacare addresses these’s problems, some consider this an over-reach of government, by being the first time the United States has ever required an individual to purchase something through a congressional act.

     With the majority of our national budget going toward the health care industry, addressing these problems and fixing the health services in America is critical to the stabilization of our economic future, and the quality of health care services provided to everyone now, and in the future.

     On Capital Hill and around the nation this has turned into a strong partisan political issue, fundamentally what is a stake can very well be the fate of America as a whole. Through our prolonged economic stability or lack thereof.

"College Night" brings future students to college

     Both Valencia’s Osceola and East campuses hosted “College Night 2011” events on campus last week with more than 120 University's from around the nation sending representatives to speak with and learn more about each perspective campus. Valencia is the host site for the Central Florida which attracted the attention of thousands of high school and college students from around the area.

     The purpose of College night is to offer any student looking for information about colleges they are interested in attending and speak face to face with individuals representing that institution.
Many high school students from around the area are attracted by teams Valencia sends out into the community and talk to student about what the college offers.

     “This event defiantly helps students to check out different schools, find out weather they qualify, and what the steps are to apply and hopefully get enrolled” said Jessica Morales Director of Transitions and Enrollment for Valencia College.

     Attracting potential student to attend Valencia is another primary goal of this event. Not only are students invited to walk around the campus and see what is offered, but they are also informed about extra on campus groups, scholarship opportunities, and general campus information if requested.

     Florida’s colleges and many other stand out university from around the nation were featured like UCF, UF, Cornell, Yale, and more totaling over 120 different institutions. Tables and rooms were provide to allow representatives from the campus to answer questions and provide information to potential students.

     “I’m here sharing my own personal experiences, trying to give some advice and guidance, and letting students know what Yale is looking for” said Michael Brodsky president of the Yale Alumni Association of Central Florida.

     There are also special focused programs like the duel language for Hispanic students offered at the University of Tampa. “ We offer bachelors and masters degrees that are taught in 50% English and 50% Spanish, for any student seeking this type of specialised degree” said Luis Martinez a volunteer of UT.

     Many of the high school students interested in larger University featured at college night still want to start there eduction at Valencia. “ Valencia is a really nice college, and I want to study sociology ,and travel the world one day comparing different countries like India and America” said Danny Blake a local high school senior.

     Current Valencia students set to transfer after graduation were also looking at the variety of featured campus. “ I’m looking for a local college and my top two picks would have to be Rollins College and Stetson University, I’m buying a house so I need to stay in the area” said Jeff Morris executive vice president of Pi Theta Kappa on east campus.

     On campus groups like Pi Theta Kappa at Valencia were also featured during college night. Other groups like student government, club 3:16, African American cultural society, and more were speaking to potential student looking to increase future membership.

     Actually visiting the schools that end up on your final list will help you get a better idea of what it's like, and really know if it’s the best fit for you or not. A decade of help through "Feed the Need" Orlando

     The 10th annual “Feed the Need” charity auction in Orlando coincides with the 40th anniversary of its founding group, the Christian Service Center, Central Florida's oldest non-profit social services agency. The CSC works to prevent homelessness, combat poverty, and help others in need in the local area.

     “We’re trying to stand as a lighthouse, to provide assistance to those who need help in our community” said Commissioner Robert F. Stuart, who also servers as executive director for the CSC.

     The auction event was divided into two parts, with a silent auction on several items featured in the center of the venue, and a live auction hosted by Barbara and Wade West. Guests paid $50 per ticket to bid on items ranging from tickets to the Orange Bowl in January, an outdoor billboard advertisement, vacations to Ireland and St. Lucia, and more.

     “When you have a wonderful organization like the Christian Service Center it's no wonder that you can fill a room with very happy supporters,” said Barbara West. “They care about the work the organization is doing, and they want to be here to help.” West was an anchor-reporter at WFTV-Channel 9 in Orlando and left last December after 24 years in the broadcasting industry.

     Influential members of the business community were also in attendance at this charity event. “There’s never been a time when hunger is such a big problem in our community,” said Robert Brown, President and CEO at the heart of Florida United Way. “This is about people coming together to help solve the economic crises that we all face in this country.”

     The over-all approach of this charity is to start with the basics like a free hot meal to those who need it. Programs like the non-profit Daily Bread that has served nearly three and a half million meals in Orlando and gives out an average of 580 meals a day in two locations.

     A majority of the funds raised through the auctions and throughout the year by various donations goes to the Family and Emergency Serviceman program, which provides emergency assistance and relief during times of economic crises to individuals and families, such as a single mother whose sick child needs help to pay for medication.

     "We absolutely love it, not only are there great items to bid on, but it all goes to help the less fortunate in our area,” said Judie Lamprey, who has attend this event for the past eight years. Another guest in attendance, Cheryl Forte said, “I think it's just wonderful, and it's something only the good people of Orlando can really do right, and that they take care of each other.”

     The only way programs like this are able to succeed is with the support of the community and political leaders. Auction events like this are only the highlight to a yearly struggle of assistance and charity in troubling times. Though the crises we face now will not get better over night, it will surly be worse unless we all step up and help the less fortunate in our community to rebuild America from with-in.

Inside look at Valencia's ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’

A dedicated group of acting students are currently rehearsing for this year's musical production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” in the Performing Arts Center at Valencia's East Campus. This up-beat, funny, and often over-the-top musical comdedy is sure to entertain and delight all who attend.

     Julia Gagne, Valencia professor and the play’s director said, “Last year we did the Rogers and Hammerstein musical ‘Carousel’ which is a huge show. So it's not outside the realm of my experience doing major musicals.”

     This 'forth wall breaking' production is a tribute to the roaring 20s and the beginnings of the Jazz era in music. It requires a real triple treat talent from most of the ensemble cast required to sing, dance, and act throughout the performance.

     It's set in a fantasy world in the sad but lovable mind of a man in a chair. The character has never seen the show, but when he listens to ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ in his lonely apartment, a grand musical performance breaks out. The “Man in Chair” interacts with the audience as they watch, and eventually plays a role in the main performance.

     “It does exactly what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world, and it makes you feel happy” said Robert DiGiovanni, a second year Valencia business management student, who plays the role of “Man in Chair.”

     The story focuses on a love torn, Broadway star named Janet Van De Graaff. “She's choosing between fame and love,” said Jillian Gizzi, a second year Musical Theater student, who plays the lead role of Janet. “You can tell that she still loves performing, but if she gets married it's all over.”

Other great characters are part of the total experience, like the cheerfully tipsy and life-loving “Drowsy Chaperon,” played by Evangeline Mateo, and the flamboyant Latin Lothario “Aldolpho,” played by Paul Layton. Most of the cast have several songs and dance numbers they have to perfect before the first set of performances later this month.

Theatrical performances like this are a special experience and anything can happen. After a summer of loud explosions and super heroes at the box office, why not take in some real fine arts and support your fellow students at this production at Valencia‘s Performing Arts Center.

Florida picks Cain in closely watched straw poll

The Final event of “Presidency 5” in Orlando was the first Republican straw poll for the 2012 election in Florida. Over 2,600 party delegates gathered to cast their vote for a Republican presidential candidate, which resulted in a surprisingly strong 37.1% win for businessman Herman Cain from Atlanta, Georgia.

“I find Herman Cain to be the most sincere, he isn’t a career politician but a true citizen candidate” said Tom Trombly a volunteer for the Cain campaign and Valencia alumni.

Delegates for the poll were divided among most of Florida’s county’s based on their number of registered Republicans. Many candidates held meet and greet events before this straw poll but only three, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, and Herman Cain, stayed through Saturday to personally address the delegation before the vote.

Sanatorium and Gingrich both received a fair amount of attention during and after their addresses, but it was clear before the vote that Herman Cain made a strong connection with most of the delegates that loudly cheered for Cain and displayed signs and buttons showing their support.

Some candidates not in attendance sent speakers on their behalf and video presentations like the high budget and sharply produced new campaign ad from Rick Perry. Michelle Bachmann who finished first in the Iowa straw poll six weeks ago opted out of this straw poll and received last place with only 1.5% of the vote. Mitt Romney didn’t participate in the straw poll but was still on the ballot and received a third place finish with 14% of the votes cast.

The largest surprise of the poll result was the strong 34.1% first place finish for Atlanta businessman Herman Cain over the assumed front runner Rick Perry, who received less then half of Cain's total, with only 15.4%.

“I was going to vote for Perry but was really impressed with Cain’s demeanor and his story of surviving colon cancer” said Joseph Simmons, delegate voter, after the poll on Saturday. Cain received a standing ovation at Thursday’s debate after speaking about having a 30% chance of surviving stage four cancers, and pointed out that if he was on the Obama health care plan he would have died, because of having to wait for test and procedures through a socialized medical insurance plan.

In a state with a high number of elderly residents, the idea of not receiving the proper care or even dying through inferior or mismanaged government programs, could very-well have been the pinnacle moment that connected Herman Cain to the majority of delegate voters.

The final results were presented by Florida Governor Rick Scott, who further addressed the cheering crowd, after the announcement of Cain's victory. “The road to the White House runs right through Florida, and it pays to be here” said Scott.

Herman Cain fully participated throughout most of the week and many in attendance at the straw poll remarked that he was more of a down to earth, shake your hand, and look you in the eye candidate compared to the others in the race.

“If it hadn’t been for the support that we have garnered all over the state of Florida and all over the country, this couldn’t have happened” said Cain, through a video response from his campaign tour bus, after the results were announced.

New debate marks Florida’s future in politics

Orlando was in the national spotlight last week with a social media, tech savvy themed debate for nine Republican presidential candidates. This was in conjunction with 'Presidency 5,' a fund-raising showcase held by The Republican Party of Florida.

This debate, hosted by Fox News and Google, combined the standard moderated debate style, inner-woven with text messages and YouTube video questions. Over 18,000 questions were submitted, with approximately 100,000 votes to determine the most popular questions people want answered, making this a highly interactive debate. Questions and facts given by the debate moderators were often submitted via online polls and search trends through Google to identify the concerns of the general public, such as correlations between gas prices and purchasing vehicles with the best miles per gallon.

“Events like this are good for the state and good for Central Florida, and it's great to encourage party regulars to come out and show support” said Bill McCollum, former Florida Attorney General. McCollum ran against current Florida Governor, Rick Scott, in the 2010 gubernatorial election.

Throughout the debate candidates answered questions, stated their positions on issues, and compared the actions of the Obama administration to the actions they would take if elected. A majority of the time was spent between front runners Mitt Romney and Rick Perry and their past actions as Governors of their respective states. The event was not without controversy as was exemplified with some audience members booing a question from a gay solider who recently admitted his homosexuality following the repeal of “Don't ask don't tell.”

This was the third nationally televised debate for the Republican presidential candidates for the 2012 election. With more than a year to go before the election, now is a critical time for candidates to meet with the people, get out their political message, and gain personal and financial support for their campaigns.

Most of the delegates that voted at the Florida straw poll on Saturday attended this debate to help form an opinion of the candidates of their choice.

“Rick Perry has the most courage of any candidate, he is the only one to refuse an order by the Obama administration” said Timothy Allen a delegate from Union County Florida.

“The youth just don't participate enough in politics or care about the future of this country, this is a great opportunity to see what the candidates are all about” said Glen Sundin a student government officer from Brevard Community College.

This event was the opening kickoff for the “Presidency 5” showcase which included not only the debate on Thursday, but also a CPAC fund-raising event and meet and greets on Friday, and culminating in the straw poll on Saturday. The three days of events gathered national attention, and this is the first time all three have been held at the same time. With the increased attention in the media and around the nation this will most certainly increase the influence of the Florida Republican primary in 2012.

Movement for peace through inspirational cinema

Valencia College participated in a new venture in the support of the Global Peace Film Festival this weekend at the Plaza Cinema Cafe in downtown Orlando. The use of movies to spread the message of peace around the world is the goal of the Global Peace Film Festival, an international movement, which premiered in 2003.

With it's free screening of the Jeremy Gilley film “Peace One Day,” which is the center piece for the creating and realization of a global peace the festival strives to bring the message of global peace to reality. Their efforts were rewarded when the United Nations unanimously adopted the first ever Peace Day on September 21, 2001. The actions of actor, director Jeremy Gilley are truly inspiring. He and others have worked against insurmountable odds and tragic events for over nine years to achieve what everyone would say is impossible: a world at peace.

“This is our first year with the Global Peace Film Festival, there has been so much great involvement and positive interest from many students” said Rachel Allen, Valencia humanities professor and coordinator for the Peace and Justice Initiative.

The film shown “Peace One Day,” is shot in a gritty low-budget documentary style but catches the audiences attention right from the beginning that through the United Nations and international cooperation the world can agree to one day with no war and violence and with the hope that if one day of peace can be reached than more can follow.

“It was so interesting, and what a great message of everyone working to spread peace around the world” said Lucymar Carbajal, audience member and 2nd year International Affairs student.

“Very eye opening. I didn’t know how much one day of peace could help so many distressed people in the world” said Nirush Sivarasa a 2nd year Business Major.

After seeing this film the message of International Peace Day and the Global Film Festival become clear. The goal of spreading important messages with cinema is not only effective, but perfectly embodied by this event where students watching a free film about world peace and the U.N open their minds to the possibility of planet Earth free from the violence and hatred which feed the destruction of war.

“One ambitions young man was able to do such an incredible thing, and really change the world, I can't wait to talk to my students about this film” said Penny Villegas a professor at Valencia for 30 years.

UCF's red bandannas honer rival’s fallen hero

     Spirits and hopes were high at the campus of UCF for last Saturday’s home football game against Boston College, not only after a championship wining season last year and a dominating opening game last week, but also for a more sentimental reason. UCF students gathered to honor a fallen hero from Sept. 11, 2001 on the eve of the emotional 10 year anniversary.

     The sea of students wearing black and gold also had splashes of red thrown in: red bandannas tied around arms and under baseball caps. The red bandanna was to honor Boston College alumni and lacrosse player Welles R. Crowther.

     Crowther, who was known for wearing a red bandanna given to him by his father, lost his life saving others in the World Trade Center during the attacks in New York. He helped a group of people escape the tower by leading them to the stairs, making several return trips to find more survivors. Eyewitnesses said a man with a red handkerchief tied over his face led them to safety, the clue that let Crowther’s family know it was their son.

     Sadly, the 24-year-old was inside the tower as it collapsed.

     Crowther’s story aired on national networks leading up to the game. Garrett Weiss, a UCF student, was moved to action by the story.

     “When I saw the video clip on ESPN, I posted it to one of the many UCF fan groups on Facebook,” Weiss said. “Neal (Surrena) commented on it, and we both said we have to do something.”

     The two students created a Facebook group urging students to wear red bandannas to the football game in honor of the fallen hero. One the group’s numbers swelled into the thousands within hours, the duo began contacting the media.

     With so much attention around this tribute several local stores in the Orlando area actually sold out of red bandannas in the days prior to the event.

     A couple from Aloma United Methodist Church were passing out small bandannas to any student without one who wanted to show their support. “It's such a great thing to honor the heroes of 9/11, and seeing UCF students show that they really care,” said church member Leigh Turner.

     “It just feels so good to show support for our team and also the other team like this,” said bandanna-clad UCF student Bailey McKay.

     The overwhelming response made Weiss proud of his fellow students. “It’s been great,” Weiss said of the response. “I’m truly happy to call myself a Knight.”

Great humor at "Back 2 School Comedy Jam"

Hilarity was unleashed at the “Back 2 School Comedy Jam”on Friday September 9 in the Performing Arts Center at Valencia's east campus. This showcase was organized by Student Development with Student Government, and featured two nationally know stand-up comedians Kevin Bozeman and Buzz Sutherland.

“Ironically enough, I got started on a college campus 28 years ago, when I first saw a young Jerry Seinfeld on the University or Missouri campus, and within three years I was his opening act” said Buzz Sutherland. He has several awards for his zany but clean comic style, which centers on relating to his audience and keeping everyone entertained.

     Comedian Kevin Bozeman, from Chicago, thrilled and shocked the audience with his laid-back, but raunchy comic style, best exemplified with his closing message to students which involved not getting pregnant, “because it leads to dropping out of school, and drug use later in life”.

     An extra bonus to this event was the price which was free to all Valencia students. “Starting a new semester is the hardest part, so sometimes we just need to have a good laugh” said Andres Abreu, east campus SGA President. Student Government worked with Student Development to organize this event with quality entertainment in mind.

     “I feel more involved with school after going to this, it's like a pep rally to start the semester” said new Valencia student, Ivan Gutierrez.

     “Everyone can relate to comedy, and it gets students involved, and it's not as threatening as a seminar” said Liz Connor, a 2nd year student majoring in human resources.

     Some facility came out to watch, and in the case of Professor of Reading, Karen Cowden, were involved with the show by volunteering for a clever magic trick involving an eaten playing card, and an awkward request for retrieval of said card. “It brings a great start of the semester with such great comedians here at Valencia” said Cowden.

     Several events take place throughout the rest of the year so if you missed this performance don't worry. School house scholars that rock for a reason

The Rock N' Roll charity concert was performed by “The Rouge Scholars” last Saturday at Valencia's Osceola campus. This event worked to raise money for the “Jane Dewey/ Monty Bilyue Emergency Healthcare Services Scholarship”. The band, formed by Valencia professors, administrative personnel, and other musicians put on a family friendly performance with a surprising amount of talent.

“We’ve been together for about three years now raising money for different charities, like tonight’s cause to help emergency medical student scholarships through the Valencia foundation” said Al Groccia, a math professor, and founding member of “The Rouge Scholars” band. “Were happy to be here and were gonna rock the audience tonight.”

     The concert at the Osceola auditorium was attended by over 40 guests some bringing their kids out to enjoy the show as well. The show started with some classic rock songs by Elvis and the Beatles, and progressed into newer songs from artists Weezer and Jack Jonson. Graphics behind the band displayed song lyrics for the audience to participate and sing along, and included special video segments to entertain the audience.

     The band is quite literally a family, seen best in the husband and wife members, Lisa and Brian Macon.

     “At first I just came to sing for one song, but I loved it so much I just kept coming back” said Lisa Macon, Valencia professor of Information Technology and new Dean for Business, IT & Public Service beginning in the fall.

     “They know us professionally as college faculty, and administrators, so the fact that we are doing something in a band is usually pretty surprising” said Brian Macon, drummer for the 'Scholars', and a math professor at Valencia's Lake Nona campus, and currently “balancing work, family, my music, and working on my doctorate at UCF.”

     With a large group in attendance everyone enjoyed the show and the attendees felt good about contributing to the Valencia foundation. “I'm having a real good time, I even went up to dance a little” said student Elizabeth Parks. “It’s a great show with a wide range of music selection, and they really are some talented musicians” said Jack Thomas.

     The funds raised through this event go to assist with helping students to finish school and move on with their professional careers. In addition to the Valencia Foundation this band has raised money for Give Kids the World, Freedom Ride, Orange County Families in Transition, and the American Cancer Society.

Summer dance students have a bright future

     The Valencia Dance Department recently presented it's Summer Repertory Concert, a unique event that showcases students majoring in Dance Performance, and high school students that participate in the Valencia Summer Dance Institute, a free four-week summer program designed to inform, instruct, and recruit dancers for future admittance to Valencia's Associate in Arts Dance Performance Degree.

     “Our dancers, in addition to our theater and music students work extremely hard throughout the year” said Dr. Suzanne R. Salapa the Director of Dance at the Valencia east campus. “We work carefully to select works that will have a broad appeal,” she states.

     The concert featured a large number of dancers performing 12 different pieces highlighted with classical music, special effects, and beautifully choreographed movements. There included segments like “Dream Work” a performance piece choreographed by Valencia alumni Ashley Hymson. There were also several additional guest artists and choreographers from across Florida and the nation.

     “Dancing is a great way to express your feelings through your body, and exactly what you feel you can share with the audience” said Ismael Torres a second year Valencia dance major who has studied and performed for over seven years. “It's refreshing to go out and see a classic style performance in a world of reality TV garbage on every channel.”

     Audience members raved about the quality of the concert and talent of the students involved. “The instructors do such a great job with theses student dancers, and create a performance that is entirely enjoyable” said concert attendee Bruce Thoms. “ There are so many talented dancers on stage, I love coming out to show support for my fellow dance majors” said Valencia dance student Lauren Scruton.

This is scheduled at the end of the fall semester November 18th and 19th, and is focused solely on performance pieces choreographed by Valencia students. Harry Potter convention focused to inspire youth

     Thousands of Harry Potter fans from around the world met at the Lowes Royal Pacific Hotel in Universal Studios Florida for the Leakycon 2011 convention last week. This annual charity event was bolstered by the release of the final Potter film “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, and a plethora of guest speakers, entertainers, live shows, and much “Pottermore.”

     Costumed fans and players from the International Quidditch Association, Inc, a nonprofit organization promoting the sport of Quidditch in colleges and high schools around the world, give the impression that this is only a mass gathering of Potter- heads sharing their same fantasy interest or “Fandom.” But this event is much more in promoting and encouraging a love of literature and the art of storytelling and inspiring children to read.

     The opening events “Lit Day” centered on several literary discussion panels. The first involved a group of 5 young adult authors speaking about how books and being obsessed with books fostered their writing and inspired their lives. “I love the fact that people are coming together about books, and that doesn’t happen often” said Libba Bray a New York Times best selling author. “I have to say that Leakycon is 12 kinds of awesome.”

     In addition to the focus of literature, attendees were treated to interviews and a question and answer session which included 10 actors from the final Harry Potter film. “I want to make Leakycon its own country, I never want to leave” said Evanna Lynch, who played the character Luna Lovegood in six of the Potter movies.

     The five day extravaganza also featured a performance by “The Starkids” a group of theater students from the University of Michigan. Their production of a Harry Potter themed musical has received millions of views on YouTube and helped spark the career of new Glee cast member Darren Criss.

     Potter fans in attendance were all very passionate about the overall message of the book and film series. "Magic is real, as long as you have the imagination to think of a better world, then you can make this a better world" said Lucy Stambaugh an enthusiastic fan with bright pink hair and dressed in young wizard garments.

     All the events of this convention worked to raise money for two main charities focused on literacy awareness. Book Aid International has been promoting literacy for disadvantaged people in Sub- Sahara Africa since 1956. Funds also go to The Harry Potter Alliance, a non-profit organization, which inspires youth around the world to get involved in social issues, such as protecting thousands of woman and children in Darfur and Burma.

Casey found not guilty but is still responsible

     One of the biggest stories in American news is the high profile trial of Casey Anthony. After several years of developments in this drama filled trial, comes the time when the jury is tasked with deciding the fate of Casey Anthony.

     The fact is Casey had possession of her deceased daughter’s body on June 16th 2008 as stated by her attorney, Jose Baez, in opening statements. Casey went 31 days of concealing the death of her child not of failing to report a missing child.

This is a trail about desperate acts and desperate people.

     Casey’s litany of lies, in her futile attempt to avoid responsibility for the death of Caylee, is the desperation of a young mother who wants the freedom to live her life without the burden of a child. George Anthony expresses his desperation in the realization upon the discovery of his granddaughters’ remains in his attempted suicide and the suicide note. Cindy Anthony tried desperately to implicate herself in the damaging internet searches, though it was revealed she was in fact at work, in a vain attempt to prevent her daughter Casey from receiving the death penalty.

     Though there is no “smoking gun” piece of evidence there is in reality a dead child whose mother is responsible. There exists a trail of evidence from the admission of Caylee’s death on June 17th to the deception thereafter, the false police statements, odor in the car, internet searches, and attempts to blame others. Common sense is the key to this trial’s outcome. Motive and opportunity are the gun.

     Home videos and family photos portray a happy loving family while the trial and drama leading up to the trial show this family’s darker side filled with lies and deception. The fact remains that Caylee died with her mothers knowledge and her mother concealed the death and body. We must ask ourselves does it really matter how she died. At the end of the day, the jury must decide the level of Casey’s responsibility of the death of her little girl, Caylee.

Increasing fees harm students furthered eduction

     Tuition rates for all of Florida's public universities can now be increased by 15 percent, the maximum allowable amount. This was a result of the decision by the Florida Board of Governors last Thursday, and marks the third consecutive increase in state tuition rates.

     Drastic budget cuts to education are to blame for the increase, but the long term affects are going to be far worse for the state’s overall education standards. The argument has been made that Florida has one of the lowest tuition rates in the country, currently 48th, but Florida was ranked number one last year as the state with the highest rising cost of living expense.

     Most working class people are under-employed and are experiencing little to no increase in annual salaries, while the cost of living continues to rise. In this economic climate, current students are more likely not to pursue extended degree programs.

     The State government needs to be fiscally responsible, but also balanced with the decisions they make concerning budget and maintaining an eye toward the country's growth. Less funding lowers the quality of education, and produces fewer students who are able to seek a higher education. That correlates with a lower standard in the overall quality of life.

     Quality education is imperative for the continued growth of our nation’s economy. Education is the backbone of new industry and financial growth and should be encouraged, not stymied.

Charity fundraiser held in honor of former graduate

     The 6th annual 5K fund-raising event “Run, Walk, and Roll” was held last Saturday at Valencia's west campus. 225 participants paid to race and raise money for all of Valencia's scholarship programs. The event was in honer of former Valencia graduate and Valencia alumni board member, Justin Harvey, whose story inspires and helps students six years after his tragic death.

     As a student in the sports medicine department at the University of Central Florida, Harvey worked with the Valencia alumni board to organize the first 5K race as a partnership between the two campuses. Harvey was hospitalized and later passed away before he could see his idea come to fruition.

     Sharon Skoloski, Justin's mother and a professor at Valencia's West campus, recalled what her son has done for through his life for other students. "He did a lot of great things with and for Valencia,” said Skoloski. “He was never able to finish school, but this fund-raising event, in his memory, helps other students to realize their own dreams."

     Mary Myers, a Valencia alumni board member, was a friend of Harvey’s when he attended Valencia. Myers said, "He had dreams of graduating from UCF and never realized that dream, which is why this is such a great partnership between the two campuses to raise money to help other students. Valencia hosts the event and UCF sends members of their sports medicine department to help runners warm up before the race".

     Ralf Jenne, a Professor of Philosophy and Humanities at Valencia’s West campus, has participated in the past four races. Jenne said, "I always try to win my age group, last time I came in second and would love to win this year." Professor Jenne finished 10th overall with a time of 23:03.3 and winning first place fore his age group of males 40-44.

     The 5K race is open for all runners and speed walkers to compete, with medals awarded to the top three male and female racers divided into groups based on age and affiliations. Trophies were awarded to the the top place and first masters for male and female participants.

     This event was successful in raising money, and keeping the legacy of Justin Harvey alive. Justin's mom, Professor Skoloski said, “My family and I want to thank everyone for all their hard work and participation and remind everyone of Justin’s motto ‘May you all shine out loud.’”

Annal 5K race won by talented Valencia student

     The 6th annual 5K “Run, Walk, and Roll” was a charity race hosted by the Valencia Alumni Association on saturday April 9th. It's also the VAA's biggest fund-raising event of the year. Several changes were made to this event compared to years past with the goal to raise more funds and a larger student turnout.

     This year’s race throughout Valencia's West campus was the first to be officially certified by the U.S.A. Track and Field tracking standard for proper 5K distance (3.1 miles). Front Running Sports was also hired for the first time to track runner’s times with optional electronic ankle monitors for races.

     The race in the past was held on Sunday morning, but was changed to Saturday evening to encourage larger numbers of students to participate. This was adversely affected by the higher then normal temperature of nearly 90 degrees during the start of the race.

     Carlos Romero (#28) is a drafting and design student at Valencia, and finished the race first overall with a time of 19:23.5. Romero said “Today’s race was a hot one, and I was in third place and felt like I was going to give out around mile one and a half. The guy in first place then fell off the race due to a major cramp and I was inspired to catch my second wind.”

     Romero then made his move with a quarter mile left to surpass the second place finisher, Roque Nunez, by a time of 11.8 seconds.

     Roque Nunez (#50) came in third place overall at this race last year, and is a long-time distance runner that has participated in the New York Marathon, and is racing in the Boston Marathon next week. Nunez said “I got third place last year and second place this year, but more important than winning and losing is raising money to help the students with this great cause.”

     Julia Logan (#31) finished 7th overall, with a time of 22:41.2, to become the first place female finisher. A special kids “fun run” was held following the primary race to encourage young children to be active and participate.

     This entire event could not have been possible without the support from volunteers, helping to feed and hydrate runners on such an abnormally warm race day. A day without shoes enlightens charity cause

Started by Tom's shoes this event is designed to help the less fortunate and raise awareness of poor children around the world. Those who wanted to help out were encouraged to donate new or slightly used shoes to any participating drop off location like the one at Valencia's west campus SGA room in build three. Some went the entire day without shoes to also see what the less fortunate have to endure. Tom's shoes as given millions of free shoes to struggling peoples and children in poor country’s.

Megacon 2011 brings the superheroes to Orlando

Megacon is the largest pop culture gathering in Florida, and caters to the fans of sci-fi, comic books, gaming, animation, and much much more. The convention has been held sense 1993 and has grown in size to become the largest event to take place in the Orange County Convention Center. This years event was highlighted by special guest like William Shatner and Comic legend Stan Lee. Robotics used to motivate the future of innovation

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition held its annual Florida regional competition at the UCF arena last weekend. A total of 60 teams of high school students and supporters from around the nation competed for placement in the championship in St. Louis April 27-30.

     Erik Halleus is the vice-chairmen of the Florida’s FIRST education foundation and a member of the FIRST executive advisory board. Halleus said “Science and technology today have become the most influential components of our nation’s and world economy. Being leaders in these fields will help are nation continue to move forward in the future.”

     Large groups of wildly themed multicolored teams supported by mentors and family, cheered their teams robots, and point scored during the game itself. Each team was only given six weeks to prepare for the specific tasks required by this year’s competition.

     The game this year is called “Logo Motion” where teams have three goals to achieve with multiple robots. The majority of the game involves picking up and placing inflatable symbols from the FIRST robotics logo (a red triangle, white circle, and blue square) on metal hangers.

     Bonus points are awarded for an initial fully autonomous round, where the human drivers are not allowed to touch the controls, proper placement of the inflatable symbols, and even a secondary detachable mini-bot race, up an eight foot poll, at the end of each round.

     Besides inspiring young high school students, several college students participate as mentors and advisers. Many of them can be found in the work area backstage where teamwork and offering assistance to other teams is another major message of the entire organization.

     Ryan Morin and Kelly Wildermuth are both mechanical engineering students currently taking classes at Valencia and working for local robotics team called “Exploding Bacon” based with Orlando 4-H. Morin said “It's beneficial to me because it gives me lots of work experience.” Wildermuth said “I've been involved with FIRST for seven years, and I’ve always loved playing with robots since I was a little kid.”

     Matt Conroy has taught mechanical engineering for 12 years at Palm Bay High School and mentors students for the pirate themed group “Piratech robotics.” Conroy said “We need new ways to inspire the scientific and engineering students of the future. This foundation has proven time and time again how to do just that.”

     Participants are exposed to vital employment groups in the Orlando area with major involvement from NASA, Locke-Martin, Walt Disney, and other major corporations. FIRST robotics is a great organization to become evolved with for anyone looking for high-paying engineering and technological -themed jobs in the future.

Government protesters rally to "Awake the State"

Hundreds attended the protest rally in front of Orlando City Hall last Tuesday, March 8. Disagreement over the recent budget proposals, and other decisions of newly elected Florida Governor Rick Scott, fueled the adverse reaction by Floridians.

     People attending the Orlando rally were comprised of teachers, firefighters, police, and other concerned locals. Many people carrying signs denounced Rick Scott and the potential actions of the state legislators on the day they began its most recent session.

     The more than $4 billion, cut in education alone, along with the addition of merit pay for all teachers, is a strong topic with education professionals. Ailene Markham, a special needs teacher from Edgewater High School said, “Close to 50 percent of teachers don’t teach FCAT classes, so how will we be rated by this merit pay system?”

     Along with cuts in education there is also a proposal to lower and eventually eliminate the state corporate tax, and at the same time decrease state workers’ pensions to cover the loss in revenue. Steve Clelland, head of Orlando’s Professional Firefighters Union said, “Everyone here is upset with the idea of giving a tax break to corporations and putting the burden on the middle class.”

     There are also proposals to affect the rights of the unions for firefighters and police in the state. Retired transit police officer, Victor M. Torrese, has been involved with unions for over 40 years and said, “Rick Scott is trying to destroy us and take away our bargaining rights. The same issues they have in Wisconsin are being seen here.”

     Besides union and state workers, many other concerned citizens also attended the rally. Seminole State College student Sarai Chavarria said, “It doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat or Republican, what matters is what you stand for and doing what’s right for the people.”

     The “Awake the State” rally idea began online with a Florida-based organization relying on social media and word of mouth to help spread their message: “We can’t afford more budget cuts.”

‘The Crucible’ casts a spell with intense emotion

Valencia Character Company is currently presenting Arthor Miller’s play “The Crucible” at Valencia's East campus. The powerful Tony award-winning story, a canon of American theatre, is portrayed with intense emotions and new innovations not typically seen in this production in the past.

     John DiDonna, the play’s director, said, “We're doing a very visceral production with dynamic subject matter based on true events. It’s fast-paced. The emotions run high. We even had a few audience members actually crying out in the hallways.”

     The most notable addition are the “Afflicted Girls of Salem” who act as a Greek chorus to the bewitched actresses’ performances. Though often laying quietly next to the stage, they become loud and interactive during key scenes, such as the girl's confessions of their devotion to God and accusations of witchcraft.

     Kristin Abel, the production’s technical director, said, “I’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback. Audience members are amazed at the staging and fresh interpretation of the script.”

     Shannon McGough, the lead actress playing Abigail Williams, is a theater major at Valencia. McGough said, “People have been getting very emotional during the show. I’ve seen a women with tissues, and last night a girl sitting in front of me was grabbing onto her boyfriend’s arm.”

     Lead actor Cory Boughton, who plays the conflicted John Proctor, is a UCF student who performs with several other theater groups in the area. Boughton said, “People use the word intense. I like to think of the play as being visceral, with the added emotional level not typically seen in this play.”

Laura Mejia, who studies theater at Valencia's Osceola campus, said, “I love the intensity of this play, and the afflicted girls and other actors help me feel very connected to the performance.

Long standing traditions return to Kissimmee

The 67th annual Kissimmee Valley Livestock Show and Fair started last Friday and it features 80 different thrill rides, prize wining games, classic foods, and music performances.

The mayor of Kissimmee, Jim Swan said, “The fair has a great beneficial impact on the local economy, and gives folks a taste of this county’s history and heritage.”

The widely popular country music group “The Band Perry” first performed to kick off a nation-wide tour on Tuesday night. The group, best known for their platinum single “If I Die Young,” was recently nominated for best new group at the 44th annual CMA awards.

Fair President Rick Nelson said, “We are excited about giving fair guests the opportunity to enjoy such a talented group.”

The long standing traditions of Osceola agriculture are a treasured part of the local community and showcased at the fair. The Kissimmee Valley Livestock show has hundreds of attendees throughout the fair schedule that showcase and auction off a wide variety of farm animals from prize pigs to adult cattle.

The attractions this year include ferris wheels, petting zoos, helicopter rides, bumper-cars, magic shows and others. Classic fair fun-houses like Willkommen and Monkey Maze are found with a wide variety of other carnival games and vendors. Also look out for one very insulting clown in a dunk-tank that taunts passers-by with personal jabs.

Classic fair food staples like funnel cake, cotton candy, suger-glazed kettle popcorn along with many other are found through a wide array of games to be played and prizes to be one. Fair guest Jacob Swanson said, “I love the food at the fair it reminds me of my childhood.”

The fair runs from Feb. 11-20, and has ties to the 126th annual Silver Spurs Rodeo on Feb. 18. One of the largest rodeos in America, it also has thousands of people that attend, and with the 15 dollar admission guests can get free entrance to the fair.

Normal cost for the fair entrance is five dollars for adults, three dollars for seniors and children 5-11, and free for children under five. Parking is always free and easily accessed by taking Bill Beck Boulevard off highways 192 and fallowing the “Fair Parking” signs.

With all the great attraction and activities offered this year the city of Kissimmee and Osceola County are proud of the fair and the sponsors that put everything together. Bringing in the best of the county history along with exciting showcases are part of what makes the Osceola County Fair such a great enjoyment to the local community.

Community leaders honor education program

     The Orange County Take Stock in Children recognition event was held at Valencia's West campus last week. A prestigious group of community, business, and government leaders honored students and mentors involved in the program.

     Opening remarks were made by City of Orlando Commissioner, Daisy Lynum, “America has got to move forward in eduction, we cannot continue to roll back on issues.” Superintendent of Orange County Public Schools, Ron Blocker, addressed the audience later, “I'd like to personally thank Dr. Shugart and Valencia Community College for bringing Take Stock in Children to Orange County, and the Valencia Foundation for helping to move things forward.”

      More than 16,000 students in Florida have been enrolled in the Take Stock in Children program since 1995. Starting in eighth grade, students sign performance contracts agreeing to get good grades, exhibit positive behavior, and remain drug and crime free. They are, in turn given mentor assistance, and upon completion of the program and high school graduation, the students are awarded a Florida pre-paid scholarship to any in-state university they choose.

     The Orange County division represents 108 students in three middle schools and 11 high schools. The first 50 recruits, currently in the 10th grade, are set to be the first graduating class of the county’s Take Stock in Children program.

     The program boasts respectful figures dealing with students involved with a 92 percent high school graduation rate and a 60 percent college graduation rate. There is over 109 million dollars in Florida pre-paid scholarship assets backing the program and, since its inception, has generated over one million mentor volunteers with 7,500 current mentors in action.

     At the event this year the two students involved with the highest grade-point average were given special awards presented by Adonal Foyle, the Director of Player Development for the Orlando Magic. The top student received a new Dell laptop computer. The student with next highest score received a signed basketball from the Orlando Magic. Additionally, both students received free tickets to Thursday night's Orlando Magic and Miami Heat game.

     President of Orange County's Take Stock in Children, Elisha Gonzalez-Bonnewitz, is also an executive director of Valencia Community College. After recounting the success rate of students involved, Bonnewitz said, “These successes are a reflection of why Valencia believes in this program.”

Valencia Volunteers host stalker awareness event

The openness of the digital community has caused virtual stalking to become increasingly common in the modern age. Stalking Awareness Month, and its sponsors, try to help individuals around the nation stay safe and informed about the dangers of predators.

     Information Stands, organized by peer educators and Valencia Volunteers, guided students in the lessons of stalker awareness. Valencia Volunteers member, Angelique Mulligan said, “We are working to spread information about stalker awareness and sexual assault awareness this month,” when asked about the mission of this event.

     Persons aged 18 to 24-years-old make up the highest percentage of stalking cases, and on average affects 3.4 million Americans a year.

     Stalking ranges from a single act to a series of acts centered on causing fear in a specific person. Seventy-five percent of victims are stalked by someone they know, with nearly 50 percent of victim’s receiving at least one unwanted contact per week.

     Thirty percent of victims are stalked by a current or former intimate partner; one in five of these cases involves the stalker using a weapon to threaten or harm victims. Stalking is a crime in all 50 states with misdemeanor chargers for a first-time nonviolent offense, and felony charges for a second offense.

     Widely popular social media web sites share information with large numbers of people on the Internet. Users of social media should limit the personal data they release, and utilize all security and privacy settings to safeguard their information.

An annual event, the awareness theme for this month is “Stalking: Know It. Name It. Stop It.” This is meant to challenge people to fight this crime by learning more through information and education. Communities and individuals are encouraged to report stalking cases to the authorityies and promote general safety awareness.

Political parties need to work with each other

President Barack Obama presented his 2011 State of the Union speech to Congress and the country Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. Though his words were strong and inspiring, the actions he and Congress take in the coming months will be the true measure of his speech.

There was several opposing party members sitting together during the State of the Union speech to show unity and bipartisanship. Though it is a lovely gesture inspired by the recent violence in Arizona, it will mean nothing if government goes back to politics as usual in the coming months. What's more important is that the congressional members actually start working together to do what's best for the country, as stated by the president himself.

     The key issues to be faced include: reckless government spending, unbalanced systems of financial regulation, job creation in alternative energy production and other fields, plus investment in infrastructure revitalization, public education, and security.

     Goals addressed in the speech for the political agenda include one million electric vehicles on the road by 2015, and 80 percent of power in America generated by green energy plans by 2035. This is a great idea to get people back to work and investing in a sustainable future.

     Educational policies were also addressed like replacing no child left behind with a better system, and making the tax credit for college tuition permanent, providing 10,000 dollars over four years. This is no doubt important, but should be smartly debated as to how the programs will be paid for.

     Job creation and economic issues were the central focus of his speech, and rightly so. Issues such as reckless spending, unemployment, trade deficits, and the increasing national debt are all important issues on the minds of Americans.

     Even issues that have been very difficult politically were addressed by the president. The president promised that illegal immigration will finally be discussed and tackled by Congress, along with the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. The resolution of such large issues completely depends on the willingness of Congress to work together.

     The approval ratings for Congress have been low for several years according to Gallup polls. There was a shift in power during the last election cycle with voters choosing to get rid of many incumbent members. This needs to serve as a wake-up call to everyone elected and remind them that they are not guaranteed another term if they do not act responsibly.

A new focus on safety after violence in Arizona

Security and safety is everyone's responsibility in a free society, where we maintain personal freedoms, while also looking out for the well being of others. The recent tragic shooting in Arizona can teach a lesson in security and personal empathy here at Valencia.

Jared Loughner, the suspected Arizona gunman, recently attended Pima Community College, a campus smaller in size, but similar to Valencia in many ways. Procedures dealing with security are handled by Vice-president of Security and Safety, Tom Lopez, who oversees all four Valencia campuses. Lopez strongly believes when dealing with safety “nothing can happen without information, knowledge is power."

     For any on campus disturbances reports are filed with the campus dean, and if needed students are removed from the area and taken to speak directly with the dean, or law enforcement if required. The dean of students will then form a review of the instance and individual on a case by case basis. If the disruptive person is not a student at Valencia or a guest they are asked to leave school grounds and can be forced off property by security if necessary. Lopez points out that “if an individual is a danger to themselves or anyone else Florida's 72 hour Baker Act law can be applied for any type of assessment through law enforcement or mental evaluation.”

     Politically motivated violence has been seen in Florida over the past few months alone, with death threats against former congressman Alan Grayson during his reelection campaign in November, and in December, the near tragic scene when the Panama City School Board meeting was held hostage by a deranged gunman. As a precaution any Congressperson or special guests attending events at Valencia receive elevated security protection as part of their visit.

     Several students at Valencia's Osceola campus personally encountered a disturbing individual yelling at everyone in the front parking area in late September. He was yelling anti religious rants that offended many students, some of whom threatened the disturbed person in response. This person than abruptly reached into a bag he was carrying and presented papers with wild incoherent rambled scribbling over the pages.

     Despite several threats and other actions this individual went on for several minutes without any regard for his personal safety. A disturbed person has the potential to cause harm to others when they have no regard for their own safety.

     Nathan Hicks, in charge of security at the Osceola campus, had no record of this event since it went unreported to his office, but stated “in the past the public Lynx buses that connect to all the campuses, have brought disruptive individuals that are then dealt with by security."

     There are programs in existence and in the works all focused on helping Valencia students remain safe and informed with help alert stations throughout all campuses, telephones with easy connect to security, and off duty police officers during peak hours that maintain radio connections with security and law enforcement dispatch. All of these systems and precaution have been in effect for several years at Valencia.

     "Valencia Alert" is a security and crisis alert system that sends important messages via e-mail, text message to mobile phones, and pagers. Alerts are sent in the event of any dangerous situations, or severe weather related warnings. Anyone interested can sign up and select which alert system they prefer at alert.valenciacc.edu

     There is also talk of a smart phone application in the future where students can send in alerts and warnings via text message. For now any student that feels a need to discuss disturbances or disturbing behavior can speak to any faculty member, security personnel, or anyone they feel comfortable with on campus. Report's are filed in the security office and can remain anonymous.

     Reach out to any friend or classmates you believe are in a troubled emotional state. The suspected gunman in Tucson is a young former college student that used the same social media sites most young people use today. These websites are often used by individuals to reach out to others even when dealing with personal problems.

     Anyone that has personal issues that affect their life can be referred to mental health professionals. A small effort to reach out and help someone in need can have larger impacts and help avoid or prevent dangerous or harmful situations like the Tucson tragedy.

Free barbecue helps thaws the chill of winter break

The Welcome Back Barbecue took place at Valencia's west campus last Thursday. This event welcomed students to the campus following winter break and provided free food, entertainment, and information about Valencia based groups.

Free barbecue meals were provided by Cabin Creek Catering with choices ranging from chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, pork, beans, and coleslaw. Bill Whitney, another food vendor, also provided “tornado potatoes” which are twirled, seasoned, and deep fried potatoes on a stick. The lines, full of hungry students, all spoke highly of the quality and flavor of the food provided. Additional festivities included face painting/body art, a photography booth, and custom stickers.

This event was organized by SGA to provide students with a chance to have some fun and also learn about Valencia's many on campus groups. Valencia's Nursing Students Associations, Intercultural Students Association, Model United Nations, and Phi Theta Kappa, among others, were all stationed throughout the outdoor courtyard. SGA vice-president Wendell Smith said a main goal for this event was to “let students understand how much school spirit Valencia shows."

Keith W. Houck, vice-president for Administrative services at west campus, was at the event and said “it’s very exciting, a lot of students have turned out, and they are enjoying the barbecue today." Jacob Solomon, a third year nursing student, agreed and said “anytime you can get a free meal it's great for college students."

Live musical entertainment was provided by Erin Sparks from Nashville Tennessee. Accompanied by her husband on acoustic guitar, she performed a mix of original and cover songs inspired by artists like Sheryl Crow. Sparks brings her folk/country music style to universities and other venues throughout the country.

The welcome back barbecue and other welcoming events were held at all Valencia campuses last week. Students attending these events were introduced and informed about a variety of on campus clubs Valencia has to offer including: SGA, Valencia Volunteers, student media, and many others. Spiritual movie producer speaks with students

ORLANDO, Fla. -- David Nixon produces and directs Christian themed movies from his Orlando based film production company, Possibility Pictures. His past two films were small budget projects that have grossed over 100 million dollars combined and have been released all over the world. Nixon came to speak with students and staff at Valencia’s West Campus on Thursday, Dec. 3 to discuss his next film entitled, "Letters to God."

     "Movies have such a power to touch people’s hearts and change their perception," said Nixon. When asked why he has decided on a Christian based message Nixon said, "I know that these movies have that power to touch people’s lives."

     The film, "The Passion of the Christ," produced and directed my Mel Gibson six years ago, was also an independent Christian themed movie that went on to make more than 370 million dollars at the U.S box office. This success inspired Hollywood to start looking into what they now saw as an underappreciated market. With his film, "Facing the Giants," Nixon was surprised to see, not only interest in the film, but they were looking to give it the normal distribution as opposed to a limited release.

      It’s been a long standing fear in Hollywood that religious films would offend too many people, which wasn’t the case, as can be seen through the on-going success of his last two films, "Facing the Giants" and "Fireproof". With "Letters to God" Nixon feels the story, which also deals with cancer, will help bring in more people to the film through not only the religious message, but the message of love and faith in the worst of situations.

     The story, written by the real boy’s father, tells of his young son writing letters to God to ask for help not for himself, but the people around him negatively affected by his illness. Much care was put into keeping a solid message about the selfless compassion given from the child, which many people going through this illness can learn from and use to find comfort.

     This movie has a much larger budget of three million dollars compared to the less then 500,000 dollar budget of his last two films. Working on a grass roots style of marketing through word of mouth, internet promotions, and private screenings that also serve as charity fundraisers, this is still small compared to the majority of Hollywood films today.

     "Orlando, I always felt, is such a good base of operations for making films because the talent, technicians, and facilities are just as good here as anywhere else in the world," said Nixon. The world premier will be at the Palm Theater in Winter Garden, Fl, as well as a special pre-screening in Nashville, Tn. at the church the young boy attended. On April 9, 2010 the film will be released in 800 theaters around the country.

Local artists get support from major bookstore

     ORLANDO, Fla. – Fernando Fonseca a local guitarist and song writer is working to get his music to the world. He remains true to his unique music style that he brings to Barnes & Noble shoppers on colonial.

     Fonseca has played guitar for over 20 years, and his influences on the guitar have been; Eric Johnson, Ottmar Liebert, and Juan Carlos Quintero to name a few. The style of his guitar playing is flavored with tastes of bossa, flamenco, jazz, and classical, blending sounds of America with the Mediterranean.

     Fonseca enjoys playing at Barnes & Noble “Because of the fine job that they do in promoting, and working with an artist to bring something to the audience,” Fonseca said. This is his fourth show in the past year, and he likes that this busy store never has an empty seat.

     According to Fonseca, “I generally get good feedback from shoppers after all of my performances,” which take place in the Café area of the store.

     The Café where all performances take place is a high traffic area attracting most of the store’s shoppers. Their official web site states, “We pioneered the concept of a retail store as a community center, and our cafés are destinations for book and coffee lovers who often say, 'Meet me at Barnes & Noble'."

     The audience listening to Fonseca was mainly small groups of two or three customers seated around the café. Some are reading, others are using the stores provided Wi-Fi internet connection. Others are partaking of the selection of Starbuck provided drinks and small lunch entrees.

Kirsten Bruno who was meeting a friend at the café said, “I like what I’m hearing. He has the background music that sounds nice with his playing style.”

Another customer, Michael M. Hall, said, “He sounds good. I enjoy anyone that can play as good as this guy.”

Geoffrey Shoffstal, the events coordinator manager, is the person local musician’s contact if they want to perform at the store. “What we do through are local artist program is sell the artist CD in our music department and promote the performance on our web site,” Mr. Shoffstal said.

The stores general manager Maryellen Keatly said, “We strive to provide events to get more customers into the building and make more of a social environment, not just another book store.”

Is public speaking hazardous to your health?

     KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Professor Ronald Colburn has taught speech classes at Valencia’s Osceola campus for nearly 20 years. He recently gave an open workshop lecture on the mental and physical effect of stress involved with public speaking.

     “You can control your nerves it just takes practice” Colburn said to start off his lecture. Colburn has seen everything that a nervous student can demonstrate from stopping mid-speech, fainting, and even a student who cried throughout her speech.

     The students attending the lecture were asked to write down their questions for Colburn to answer. After the sixth and seventh question about controlling nerves, laughter was ringing out among everyone in attendance. People fear being judged for mistakes they make, but there truly is nothing to fear but fear itself.

     A few students were asked to stand behind the podium in the front of the auditorium. Important points were made about proper body poster, and the students were asked how they feel. “I feel fine but if I had to give a speech I don’t know” one student said.

     When asked about his own nervousness during a speech Jerald Bentil said “I just get nervous at the beginning but it goes away.” His friend Larans Hyppoilte pointed out “I’m only here for my bridges scholarship requirements.”

     Speech class tends to be a requirement for most majors, so issues of stress involved with public speaking will affect most students attending college. “Practice is the best way to help you control your nerves” said professor Colburn. “Altogether the lessons learned from public speaking helps students become more aware of themselves and the people around them.”
